Artificial Intelligence

Overview

Artificial Intelligence (AI) can create new possibilities for The Patterson Foundation (TPF) to strengthen people, organizations, and communities in ways that foster wide participation around shared quality-of-life aspirations.

With more than 20 active philanthropic initiatives and over 50 staff, Fellows, and consultants interweaving to 1) promote the well-being of our region, 2) create relationships that propel people and organizations to collaborate on shared aspirations, and 3) equip communities for a future of excellence for all, TPF recognizes the use of AI as an opportunity to increase efficiency and productivity, enhance creativity and innovation, and maximize impact.

AI use presents both an opportunity and a responsibility.

Logistics

As AI tools continue to evolve, The Patterson Foundation encourages staff and consultants to keep exploring how these tools might thoughtfully strengthen our work. AI is not a replacement for human connection, judgment, creativity, or care — but it can be a helpful partner in brainstorming, organizing ideas, conducting research, and improving efficiency when used with intentionality and excellence.

As with all AI tools, the goal is not speed for its own sake. The goal is thoughtful exploration that strengthens clarity, connection, learning, and stewardship while maintaining the standard of excellence that defines TPF.

What is Artificial Intelligence, and how does it work?

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is technology that enables computers and software to perform tasks that typically require human thinking, such as understanding language, answering questions, generating content, recognizing patterns, analyzing information, and solving problems.

AI works by learning from large amounts of data. During this process, it identifies patterns and relationships within the information it is given. When a person asks a question or provides a prompt, the AI uses those patterns to generate a response, recommendation, or content.

AI can help with tasks such as writing, research, brainstorming, summarizing information, analyzing data, creating images, and automating repetitive work. While AI can process information quickly, it does not think, reason, or understand information the way humans do. It works by predicting the most likely response based on the data it has learned from.

How does The Patterson Foundation use AI?

With more than 20 active philanthropic initiatives and over 50 staff, Fellows, and consultants interweaving to 1) promote the well-being of our region, 2) create relationships that propel people and organizations to collaborate on shared aspirations, and 3) equip communities for a future of excellence for all, TPF recognizes the use of AI as an opportunity to increase efficiency and productivity, enhance creativity and innovation, and maximize impact.

AI is being thoughtfully explored and utilized across a variety of functions to support the expertise, judgment, and relationship-building that drive TPF's work. Examples include drafting and refining communications, newsletters, blog posts, social media content, presentations, and meeting summaries; analyzing survey results and large datasets to identify trends and insights; organizing and synthesizing research; supporting event planning and logistics; and improving administrative workflows.

What are essential AI skills for a TPFer?

Rather than focusing on specific AI skills that may become outdated as tools, platforms, and capabilities continue to evolve, TPF encourages a set of guiding principles and mindsets that help individuals use AI thoughtfully, responsibly, and effectively regardless of which technology emerges next.
