Sarasota County Health Safety Net System of Care Collaboration
The Purpose
The Sarasota County Health Safety Net System of Care Collaboration continues to bring organizations together that provide health care to the underinsured and uninsured in Sarasota County, Florida. It is an effort by healthcare providers — in a rapidly changing healthcare landscape — to ensure that all Sarasotans receive quality care in the appropriate setting, regardless of their ability to pay. While no longer an active initiative of The Patterson Foundation, the healthcare providers continue to meet and pursue this goal.
Strengthening the Impact
The Patterson Foundation strengthened the efforts of the Sarasota County Health Safety Net System of Care Collaboration by: 1) Connecting healthcare organizations with consulting experts who facilitated development of plans to achieve long-term Health Safety Net sustainability, 2) Evolving the relationships among and between the organizations into a second generation of leaders, and 3) Sharing discussions, learnings, and strategies during an ever-changing healthcare landscape.
Participating organizations displayed exceptional leadership, a willingness to innovate, the capacity to dedicate time and expertise despite full workloads, a community-oriented culture, and a readiness to work together.

Why did The Patterson Foundation support this initiative?
The Patterson Foundation works to strengthen existing nonprofit collaborations. The Sarasota County Health Safety Net System of Care Collaboration is an example of a joint effort by organizations working to solve a need for a “greater good.”
What healthcare organizations are involved with this initiative?
The four entities collaborating within the Health Safety Net were, and continue to be, the Community Health Centers of Sarasota County, Florida Department of Health in Sarasota County, Friendship Centers, and Sarasota Memorial Health Care System. These organizations have worked closely together since the collaboration began.
Although these four meet to discuss the Health Safety Net within the context of this work, these are not the only Sarasota County organizations helping to provide care to the uninsured and underinsured.
