The Purpose

John T. Berteau is the founding Chair and Chair Emeritus of The Patterson Foundation's Governing Board. During Mr. Berteau’s youth, a generous supporter paved the way for him to thrive at Asheville School. Just as the gift from young John's benefactor helped build a remarkable leader, this one-time, $1.5 million endowment provides life-changing scholarships to help students attend Asheville School — opening doors for future generations of leaders.

Why does The Patterson Foundation support this endowment?

The John T. Berteau Opportunity Endowment Fund honors The Patterson Foundation's founding Chair and Chair Emeritus, who attended Asheville School in his youth. The Fund provides a significant scholarship for an incoming Asheville School freshman experiencing financial need. The recipient shall model sound judgment, good character, integrity, and intellectual curiosity as determined by Asheville School's Admission Office.
