Will You Walk The New Civic Path with Me?

On Tuesday, June 16, I had the honor of attending the Aspirations to Actions Book Circle kickoff. The featured book, The New Civic Path by acclaimed author and thought leader Rich Harwood, is a powerful manifesto that calls on us to restore our belief in one another and in our nation. It was a moving and inspiring experience that left me and the other attendees energized with hope.

As someone who believes deeply in the power of community, I see this book as a guide forward, a spark we need to reignite civic renewal across our neighborhoods and communities.

Lately, I have been reflecting on the word “path.” I'm approaching a milestone birthday next year that coincides with America’s 250th birthday (yes, I’m a proud Bicentennial baby!). Like our nation, I believe each of us is on a path, sometimes smooth, sometimes winding, but always shaped by the direction we choose to take together.

Path, by definition can mean many things: a route forward, a series of choices, or even a trail formed by those who have come before us. As we walk our own paths, I believe we are united by shared human needs: the need to be seen, to be heard, to feel connected. Regardless of politics, Rich reminded us that we are far more alike than different and that dignity for each of us is a God-given birthright.

Yes, the road ahead may be bumpy. But starting locally, we can rebuild trust and drown out the noise. Here in the Suncoast region, we see the good happening all around us in schools, faith communities, backyards, and checkout lines. In disasters and in the every day. That’s the spirit Rich encourages us to lift up: we can do and be better as individuals, neighbors, and Americans.

So, I ask you: Will you walk this new civic path with me? Join a book circle. Become a catalyst for your community’s voice. The commitment is low, but the impact could last generations.
