Building Bridges in the Digital Age: Insights from the DA4A Symposium

In celebration of the fifth anniversary of the Digital Access for All (DA4A) initiative, The Patterson Foundation hosted the Suncoast Connect: Innovating and Thriving in the Digital Age Symposium. This event provided innovative learning opportunities for individuals across all levels of expertise in digital access, from newcomers to seasoned professionals.

One of the highlights of Day Two was the resource fair, where eleven exhibitors showcased their contributions to advancing digital access. These exhibitors provided invaluable insights into essential elements such as connectivity, devices, and skills training and support, ensuring attendees had the tools and knowledge necessary to bridge digital divides in their communities.

During the resource fair, I had the opportunity to meet Gretchen Stearns, a student at the University of South Florida (USF) who is in her final semester earning a Master of Science in Intelligence Studies. For Gretchen, this symposium was a first-of-its-kind experience. She described it as "very informative" and expressed her excitement about making meaningful connections within her community.

"Even if the person I was looking for wasn't here today, it was amazing how many of the people I did connect with, 'Oh, I know a guy who knows a guy,'" she shared, emphasizing the ripple effect of networking. "These connections can potentially open doors beyond the event itself."

One of the sessions Gretchen found particularly engaging was AI's Ambivalent Advantage: The Potential for Empowerment and Marginalization. This discussion explored the dual impact of rapid AI advancements and how they can empower workforces, entrepreneurs, and communities while simultaneously posing risks of marginalization and exclusion.

She found it fascinating to hear different perspectives, especially concerns about AI replacing jobs and the potential implications on tax revenues. "Listening to others is so eye-opening. In my classes, we're all studying the same material, but here, I get to hear real-world perspectives from across different fields." She valued the diversity of backgrounds at the symposium, recognizing how AI's applications and implications vary widely across industries.

Gretchen's background adds another unique layer to her perspective. She served four years in the military as a Cryptologic Technician Technical (CTT) and currently holds a top-secret security clearance. With her sights set on a cyber threat intelligence analyst career, she hopes the connections she made at The Suncoast Connect: Innovating and Thriving in the Digital Age Symposium could play a role in her future. One particularly promising connection was with an exhibitor from CareerSource Suncoast, who she plans to talk about her post-graduation career path.

The DA4A Symposium was more than just a celebration, it was a launchpad for collaboration, innovation, and professional growth. For attendees like Gretchen, it was a chance to not only gain knowledge but also to build relationships that will hopefully help shape their future in the digital age.
