Suncoast Digital Connect Webinar: Launching Conversations on Preparedness and Innovation

Posted on December 10, 2024 by Ericia Henry, TPF Fellow 2024/26

On December 5, 2024, The Patterson Foundation's Digital Access for All (DA4A) initiative launched its first Suncoast Digital Connect Webinar. This series was developed to maintain momentum leading up to our rescheduled Suncoast Symposium, which was postponed due to Hurricane Milton. These webinars serve as a bridge to keep engagement high and conversations meaningful as we prepare for the symposium.

The session was thoughtfully designed by DA4A initiative lead Cheri Coryea and the DA4A team. Our guest speaker, Tom Kitchen Jr, brought valuable insights from his mission to advance the emergency management profession and enhance healthcare systems' readiness and response capabilities.

During the webinar, Tom guided us through an engaging discussion about emergency management and addressing various types of crises, including natural disasters. He highlighted the challenges faced by emergency departments, such as adapting to unforeseen events and leveraging technology to bridge gaps and improve outcomes.

Key Takeaways from the Session

  1. Next-Generation Tools for Disaster Preparedness
Tools that provide detailed information about a natural disaster's path and potential impact are invaluable. They enable proactive preparedness and more efficient response strategies.

  2. AI Integration in Day-to-Day Operations
Scheduling Tools: AI can analyze and evaluate needs, streamlining resource allocation.
Mapping and Routing: AI enhances efficiency by identifying the most resource-effective routes.
Professional Development: AI-driven software can train staff and suggest actionable steps for improvement.

  3. Chatbots and Virtual Assistants
These technologies provide real-time information and support, benefiting both vulnerable populations and the general public. Their ability to offer accessible and immediate assistance makes them indispensable tools.

Tom Kitchen's expertise on such a complex topic was both impressive and accessible. The information he shared was actionable and easy to retain—perfect for adding to our personal "cookie jars" of knowledge. We look forward to sharing these insights with others when the opportunity arises and building on the momentum from this successful webinar as we approach the Suncoast Symposium.
