Suncoast Campaign for Grade-Level Reading offers community speaking engagements

Posted on July 21, 2015 by The Patterson Foundation

For a movement like the Suncoast Campaign for Grade-Level Reading to be successful, the entire community deserves to understand the campaign's goals, its significance and each individual's power to make a difference. That’s why Suncoast Campaign for Grade-Level Reading leaders from Manatee and Sarasota counties are coming together to offer speaking engagements -- at no cost -- to community organizations interested in learning more.

Leaders from the Community Foundation of Sarasota County, The Patterson Foundation and United Way of Manatee County will share about the significance of reading proficiency by third grade and encourage individuals and organizations to find ways to plug into the campaign.

Reading proficiency by third grade is a key predictor of high school graduation and long-term success. Unfortunately, 67 percent of children nationwide and more than 80 percent of children from low-income families do not reach this milestone. The Suncoast Campaign for Grade-Level Reading is part of more than 168 communities in the national Campaign for Grade-Level Reading network. It is a communitywide effort in Manatee and Sarasota counties to help all children succeed by ensuring they read on grade level.
