The Patterson Foundation is strengthening Season of Sharing with contributions of $100,000 each time the community raises $500,000 during the region’s annual campaign to help individuals and families on the verge of homelessness. The Foundation’s support aspires to build upon the previous Season of Sharing’s impact, in which people and organizations gave more than $2 million to those in need through nearly 3,000 total gifts.
Founded in 2000 by the Herald-Tribune Media Group in partnership with the Community Foundation of Sarasota County, Season of Sharing has raised more than $15 million for more than 16,000 individuals and families throughout Sarasota, Manatee, Charlotte and DeSoto counties. Season of Sharing gifts are used to help cover needs like payments for necessities like rent, childcare, and utilities, along with other emergency expenses that can mean the difference between living under a roof and living on the street. The Patterson Foundation has contributed $3.3 million total since joining the movement in 2010, which also receives support from private philanthropists and several of the region’s media outlets.
“Our region’s boundless generosity fuels Season of Sharing’s invaluable service to thousands of families throughout our community at risk of losing their homes,” said Debra Jacobs, president and CEO of The Patterson Foundation. “The Patterson Foundation adds its dollars with the contributions of our citizen philanthropists to recognize their passion and evolve our collective impact for those less fortunate.”
While Season of Sharing’s funds go to serve immediate needs, they often lead to long-term stability: Only 15 percent of families who receive Season of Sharing funds require additional assistance the following year. For every dollar spent to keep a family in their home, it takes $8 to pull them out of homelessness – making donations to those facing imminent displacement critical.
Throughout the campaign, over 50 community organizations work to ensure that the gifts are used properly and go directly to families in need by donating their time and services. Season of Sharing serves the community free of any operating cost.
