As the buzzing energy of the election season fizzles, our work contributing to making the world a better place continues! There are many ways to remain civically engaged by staying connected to your community between election years. Here are some ways to stay involved:
Voter and Election Education and Outreach
- Florida League of Women Voters: Help with voter education programs, registration drives, and advocacy.
- Policy Advocacy: Work with groups advocating for specific policy changes.
- Grassroots Campaigns: Join or support grassroots campaigns addressing issues you care about.
- Poll Worker Training: Stay trained and ready to serve as a poll worker or election official in future elections.
- Election Reform Groups: Engage with organizations focused on improving election processes and voter access.
Community Service and Mentorship
- Local Nonprofits: Volunteer with nonprofits that address community needs, such as food banks, shelters, and youth programs.
- Community Events: Assist with organizing or running community events, fundraisers, or neighborhood clean-ups.
- Mentoring: Mentor students and young adults interested in politics, civic engagement, or anything else you may be skilled in.
- School Programs: Volunteer within the schools to speak about civic engagement and the importance of voting or become a guest reader in local classrooms. Sign up for programs that bring volunteer readers into schools. Our schools always need extra hearts and hands. Check to see how your neighborhood school may be able to utilize your gifts.
- Organizational Support: Help local nonprofits or advocacy groups with volunteer coordination, training, and management.
Community Building and Advocacy
- Use your voice: Attend School Board and Commissioner Board meetings to stay abreast of local politics. Make use of the opportunities to speak as a citizen and share your support or opposing remarks with our local leaders. It is important to remember that our elected officials work for us. To do their job well, they must know the concerns of their citizens.
- Neighborhood Associations: Join or support associations that address neighborhood issues and community development.
Life gets busy, and even when we want to, we may not always be able to volunteer our time. The most important way to remain involved is by connecting with people, having meaningful conversations, and sharing what we’ve learned to help empower others. By engaging with one another, we can continue to make a positive impact in our community and beyond.
