The Patterson Foundation collected more than 200 personally written thank you cards during the Patriot Plaza community dedication June 28. These cards, which included words of gratitude and encouragement, were recently distributed to veterans being cared for at the Bay Pines VA Healthcare System in St. Petersburg.

Andy Hooker, a veteran who lives in Sarasota and is involved in many veterans issues in the area, was visiting Bay Pines the day the cards were shared. He saw first hand how the kind words affected those being treated at Bay Pines.

"There were a couple of lovely gals who came into the waiting area and passed a card to each veteran in the room," Hooker said. "These were people with missing limbs and other serious problems -- their faces just lit up. It was great to watch them read the notes and to see the smiles come across their faces."

It was clear those veterans felt the warmth of embrace from grateful Americans and the sincere gratitude for their lifetime of service to our nation.
