Season of Sharing Tops 1 Million Dollar Sparking Second Contribution

Posted on December 23, 2017 by The Patterson Foundation
Fueled by the giving spirit of the holiday season, community donors have given more than $1 million to Season of Sharing in support of individuals and families throughout the region on the verge of homelessness.

This latest milestone sparked a second $100,000 contribution from The Patterson Foundation to the campaign. To inspire even greater generosity, The Patterson Foundation will contribute additional $100,000 gifts to Season of Sharing each time the community raises $500,000 for the campaign through Jan. 31, 2018. The community has just over a month to reach the next milestone and trigger an additional contribution from The Patterson Foundation.

Every year, the community rallies together to support Season of Sharing, the annual campaign that provides a vital safety net for families in Sarasota, Manatee, Charlotte, and DeSoto counties who are on the verge of losing their homes. Since 2000, Season of Sharing has provided more than $17 million in emergency funding for more than 18,000 families and individuals in the region. The Patterson Foundation has supported Season of Sharing since 2010, contributing $3.6 million total as of November 2017.

“The holiday season is a time for giving and spreading joy,” said Debra Jacobs, president and CEO of The Patterson Foundation. “Every milestone reached during Season of Sharing is a testament to our community’s generosity. The Patterson Foundation’s contributions aim to affirm and inspire even greater giving and participation. Together we can help families remain secure in their homes.”

Created by the Herald-Tribune Media Group in partnership with the Community Foundation of Sarasota County, Season of Sharing provides individuals and families with critical assistance they need to get back on their feet and remain in their homes, covering emergency expenses like medical bills, transportation, child care and rent. Each year, the staff of the Community Foundation of Sarasota County, the Herald-Tribune Media Group and more than 50 nonprofit organizations donate hundreds of hours for project management, administration and creative planning to ensure that 100 percent of the funds raised go directly to serve those in need.

Stopping homelessness before it happens has been proven to be effective – it costs eight times more to pull a family out of homelessness than to help them stay in their home. In addition to addressing immediate needs, funds from Season of Sharing also support long-term stability. Of those who receive Season of Sharing support, 85 percent achieve stability and do not require additional assistance the following year.
