Season of Sharing Returns to Strengthen Our Community

Season of Sharing has kicked off its latest donation campaign — renewing our region’s longstanding tradition of neighbors helping neighbors in times of need. For more than 25 years, this community-wide effort has provided a vital safety net for families and individuals facing an unforeseen crisis — offering short-term assistance with lasting impact.

Created by the Community Foundation of Sarasota County in partnership with the Sarasota Herald-Tribune, Season of Sharing provides emergency assistance for essential needs such as housing, utilities, transportation, and childcare. Since 2000, the campaign has raised nearly $50 million for more than 55,000 households across Charlotte, DeSoto, Manatee, and Sarasota counties.

Seemingly small setbacks, like a car repair or a missed paycheck, can quickly spiral into crisis for individuals and families struggling to make ends meet. While the anniversaries of last year’s historic hurricanes have passed, many families in our region continue to recover from them, increasing the strain on their finances and well-being.

Season of Sharing was designed to preserve the dignity and security of our neighbors facing undue hardship — and it’s actively making a difference. In 2025 alone, Season of Sharing has distributed more than $3.1 million to 2,983 households in the four-county region, with 91% going toward rent and mortgage payments to help prevent homelessness. All funds go directly to landlords, lenders, or service providers to ensure the money is used where it’s needed most.

The Patterson Foundation has supported Season of Sharing since 2010, contributing $10.6 million in matching dollars and additional gifts. Over time, this support has been transformative for the holiday giving campaign. In the Foundation’s first year of support, Season of Sharing surpassed $1 million in community donations for the first time. During the 2024-2025 campaign, held amid the devastating 2025 Atlantic hurricane season, Season of Sharing raised $7.19 million — shattering the record for donations made at any point in its 25-year history.

As in years past, The Patterson Foundation will strengthen giving throughout the campaign with a match that inspires wide participation throughout our community: For every $500,000 raised through the end of the campaign on Jan. 31, 2026, the Foundation will contribute $100,000.

“Season of Sharing reflects the best of our community, as generous givers come together each year to restore dignity and hope to their neighbors,” said Debra Jacobs, president and CEO of The Patterson Foundation. “The Patterson Foundation’s support catalyzes giving throughout Season of Sharing, expanding what’s possible for individuals and families in our region.”
