New Nonprofits Embark on Earned-Income Ventures Through Margin & Mission Ignition

Posted on July 25, 2019 by The Patterson Foundation
When nonprofits have the ability to conceive and enact a plan to generate revenue, they’re able to unlock new possibilities that strengthen their impact in the community. For five years, Margin & Mission Ignition has provided nonprofits a platform to explore, develop and implement earned-income plans.

Three nonprofits from Sarasota and Charlotte counties will participate in Margin & Mission Ignition 2019, an entrepreneurial initiative of The Patterson Foundation designed to build organizational capacity, boost revenue and strengthen mission impact. Throughout the 30-month process, participating nonprofits will work with No Margin, No Mission, a social enterprise and national consulting firm, to develop and implement earned-income strategies.

Since its inception in 2015, Margin & Mission Ignition has helped organizations strengthen their impact and enhance their ability to serve the community through entrepreneurial strategies. This latest cohort of nonprofits is joining a network of 21 organizations from Charlotte, Manatee, and Sarasota counties with missions spanning from education to the visual and performing arts.

“Over the years, Margin & Mission Ignition has proven to be a game-changer for organizations who have demonstrated the leadership, willingness, readiness, capacity, and culture to develop earned-income streams,” said Debra Jacobs, president and CEO of The Patterson Foundation. “These three organizations are embarking on a rigorous process that should heighten their mission impact through enhanced revenue. The Patterson Foundation is honored to support this thrivability journey.”

Participating organizations in the 2019 initiative include:
Before applying to participate in the 30-month process, each of these nonprofits attended a series of learning labs with No Margin, No Mission and were evaluated on their readiness to take on earned-income planning. As the initiative progresses, the social enterprise firm will assemble the cohort to learn and share their experiences as they build and execute their business plans.
