For nonprofits navigating growing community needs, shifting funding landscapes, and increasing demand for services, finding new ways to strengthen long-term thrivability has become more important than ever. Through participation in The Patterson Foundation’s Margin & Mission Ignition initiative, NAMI Sarasota and Manatee Counties explored how earned income and entrepreneurial thinking could complement and expand its mission — ultimately leading to the creation and growth of the organization’s P.E.E.R. Training Program, a venture rooted in lived experience, recovery, and community impact.

Exploring Possibilities Through the Learning Labs
NAMI’s MMI journey began in 2023 through the initiative’s Learning Lab series, where nonprofit leaders explored a range of earned income and social enterprise opportunities designed to align with organizational strengths and community needs.

The process encouraged organizations to think entrepreneurially while remaining firmly grounded in mission. Rather than rushing toward a single business idea, participants were guided through a structured exploration process to vet multiple concepts, evaluate market opportunities, and determine which possibilities offered the strongest potential for both financial viability and meaningful impact.

At the same time, organizations assessed their preparedness for success by examining alignment across Leadership, Willingness, Readiness, Capacity, and Culture — collectively known as LWRCC. This important framework helped organizations evaluate whether they possessed not only a compelling idea but also the internal alignment and capacity needed to move forward successfully.

For NAMI Sarasota and Manatee Counties, this process led to the identification of the P.E.E.R. Training Program as a particularly strong mission-aligned opportunity.

Advancing From Exploration to Implementation
P.E.E.R. — which stands for Peer Education, Empowerment, and Recovery — created a scalable, community-based training model rooted in lived experience and recovery support. The program aligned directly with NAMI’s mission while addressing a growing need for peer-led mental health services and advocacy throughout the region.

After identifying the P.E.E.R. Training Program as the most viable opportunity — and confirming organizational readiness through alignment in LWRCC — NAMI applied for and advanced to the intensive consulting phase of MMI.

Working alongside the consultants from No Margin, No Mission, the organization engaged in a rigorous process that included development of a formal business plan, implementation of the venture, and ongoing performance tracking over time. They also engaged with the Sara Leonard Group to help raise needed startup capital.

The work required strategic focus, operational discipline, and a willingness to embrace entrepreneurial thinking. But it also provided the structure and support needed to transform a promising concept into a sustainable enterprise.

Revenue Growth and Mission Expansion
The results have been compelling. Since its inception, the P.E.E.R. Training Program has generated nearly $500,000 in revenue while significantly expanding NAMI’s mission impact. More individuals have been trained as peer specialists, access to support services has increased, and the organization has helped strengthen the broader mental health ecosystem across the community.

Importantly, the venture demonstrates how earned income can serve as a tool for mission expansion rather than mission drift. Every aspect of the enterprise reinforces NAMI’s core purpose of supporting individuals and families affected by mental illness through education, advocacy, and lived experience.

The Ripple Effects of Entrepreneurial Thinking
As often happens through participation in Margin & Mission Ignition, some of the most meaningful outcomes extended well beyond revenue generation itself.

NAMI Sarasota and Manatee Counties experienced a number of powerful ripple effects, including stronger community partnerships, increased organizational visibility, enhanced fundraising capacity, and deeper engagement with the people and communities it serves. Internally, the initiative also strengthened entrepreneurial thinking, strategic planning, and organizational confidence around innovation and growth. Perhaps most importantly, the P.E.E.R. Training Program created meaningful pathways for individuals with lived experience to lead, earn, and support others navigating similar challenges.

For NAMI Sarasota and Manatee Counties, this work is about far more than launching a successful venture. It is about creating opportunity, expanding impact, and building long-term thrivability in ways that are both deeply human-centered and financially sustainable. Their journey serves as a reminder that when nonprofits align mission with entrepreneurial opportunity — and have the right partners helping guide the process — the results can create lasting impact that extends far beyond the balance sheet.
