The Patterson Foundation will contribute $100,000 for every $500,000 raised by the community during Season of Sharing, the region’s annual campaign to assist individuals and families on the verge of homelessness. An additional $100,000 contribution will be made when the effort achieves 4,000 unique donors.
Created by the Herald-Tribune Media Group in partnership with the Community Foundation of Sarasota County in 2000, Season of Sharing has given the region an opportunity to rally behind our friends and neighbors struggling to make basic payments for necessities like rent, childcare and utility expenses. For many facing trying circumstances, the emergency assistance Season of Sharing provides can mean the difference between stable housing and a stint on the streets.
The 2014-2015 campaign follows an effort that saw nearly 3,000 donors raise more than $2 million, which went directly to nearly 2,900 families and individuals at risk of losing their home. The impressive results of this and previous campaigns have inspired The Patterson Foundation, a longtime Season of Sharing contributor, to recognize the community’s impact at key milestones during this new campaign.
“Year after year, Season of Sharing displays our community’s amazing generosity on behalf of those less fortunate,” said Debra Jacobs, president and CEO of The Patterson Foundation. “With this latest commitment, The Patterson Foundation aspires to affirm that generosity and encourage participation from donors big and small.”
About 8,300 families in Sarasota, Manatee, Charlotte and DeSoto counties have received assistance since The Patterson Foundation began supporting Season of Sharing. During that span, annual donation totals have increased from $700,000 to last year’s record-breaking total raised through the efforts of private funders and several of the community’s media outlets. Only 15 percent of families who receive assistance from Season of Sharing require further assistance the following year, indicating that the campaign is effective at generating sustainable impact for those in need.
The Patterson Foundation recently donated a one-time gift of $187,500 to 12 local nonprofits that have acted as fiscal stewards for Season of Sharing since The Patterson Foundation became involved with the campaign. These groups have been responsible for ensuring that the campaign’s funds are distributed effectively and had not received any previous operational support for their past efforts. This gift is above and beyond The Patterson Foundation’s most recent commitment.
