Nearly 100,000 Dollars in Grants Awarded in DeSoto County Through Participatory Grantmaking

Utilizing a unique approach that places decision-making in the hands of the community—a strategy known as participatory grantmaking—Hope DeSoto Long Term Recovery Group (LTRG) awarded $95,000 to organizations in DeSoto County to address ongoing Hurricane Ian-related damages and restore vital community resources.
The process differed from typical grantmaking in that priorities were determined through convening cross-sector area organizations and community members to arrive at collective decisions about what needs should be addressed to restore community resources and position DeSoto County for the most beneficial outcomes.
Hope DeSoto (LTRG) administered the grant cycle, acting as a fiscal agent and working with Arcadia-DeSoto Habitat for Humanity to convene the panel and facilitate the process. The Community Foundation of Sarasota County and The Patterson Foundation supported the participatory grantmaking initiative.
The following organizations were awarded:
  • St. Edmund the Martyr Episcopal Church, which serves permanent residents of Arcadia, as well as seasonal residents and visitors of southwest Florida.
  • Resource Angels, an organization through the North Hillsborough Baptist Church that acquires and distributes food and other household items to those in need.
  • Arcadia Main Street Program, Inc., an organization that propels economic development and fosters community in downtown Arcadia by hosting events and providing resources to businesses operating in or near the area.
  • Rebuilding Together Tampa Bay, a nonprofit that provides critical home repair and upgrades to low- and fixed-income households at no cost to homeowners to ensure safety and functionality.
  • First Baptist Arcadia, serving DeSoto County through ministry and faith-based outreach and services.
  • Arcadia Church of the Brethren, a Christian congregation that seeks to welcome all people for worship.

Dollars awarded through this grant cycle were provided by the Suncoast Disaster Recovery Fund, which was initiated by the Community Foundation of Sarasota County in partnership with The Patterson Foundation in the days leading up to Hurricane Ian’s approach in September 2022.
