On July 22, 2026, nonprofit leaders from across Florida's Suncoast gathered virtually for the first Margin & Mission Ignition Learning Lab in a series of three designed to help organizations diversify revenue beyond traditional fundraising, grants, and special events. Titled Exploring Possibilities for Earned Income: Boosting Nonprofit Revenue + Mission Impact, the session (which is the first of three that will take place monthly through September), introduced organizations to the power of mission-aligned earned income and social enterprise as strategies for generating unrestricted revenue while advancing mission impact.

Since first launching in 2013, the MMI Learning Labs have helped hundreds of nonprofit leaders think entrepreneurially, identify new opportunities, and strengthen their organizations' long-term financial thrivability. With the exception of one year during the pandemic, the Learning Labs have been offered annually, providing a consistent pathway for organizations interested in exploring entrepreneurial possibilities. This year's first Learning Lab welcomed 54 participants representing 43 nonprofit organizations from throughout the Suncoast region.

Facilitated by Larry Clark and Mike Oxman of No Margin, No Mission, the session combined education, inspiration, interaction, and practical application. Throughout the two-hour session, participants examined why earned income has become an increasingly important strategy for nonprofits seeking greater financial resilience. Rather than relying solely on grants, charitable contributions, and fundraising events, organizations were encouraged to think differently about the assets, expertise, relationships, facilities, and intellectual property they already possess – and how those strengths might be leveraged to create sustainable sources of unrestricted revenue.

The Learning Lab featured numerous examples of successful earned income ventures launched through TPF’s MMI initiative, illustrating the wide variety of ways nonprofits have transformed mission-aligned ideas into thriving ventures. Participants also explored additional success stories from the Greater Hartford Gives Foundation’s Social Enterprise Accelerator in Greater Hartford, Connecticut, demonstrating that entrepreneurial thinking can be successfully applied across nonprofit organizations of every size, mission, and sector.

The session encouraged lively discussion, thoughtful questions, peer learning, and active engagement as participants explored the characteristics of successful earned income ventures and began considering possibilities within their own organizations. The interactive format created opportunities for nonprofit leaders to learn not only from the facilitators, but also from one another's experiences, ideas, and perspectives.

The Learning Lab concluded with an overview of the journey ahead, including participation criteria for organizations interested in advancing to Learning Lab #2 titled Exploring and Vetting Earned Income Possibilities, which will take place in person on August 19, 2026 at the Carlisle Inn in Sarasota.

Before attending the second Learning Lab, each participating nonprofit team – consisting of its ED / CEO, a board member, and a staff member – will participate in a one-hour virtual consulting session with either Mike Oxman or Larry Clark of No Margin, No Mission. These individualized conversations are designed to help organizations reflect on what they learned during Lab #1, identify promising earned income opportunities, and determine whether they are well positioned to continue exploring those ideas during the remainder of the MMI journey.

By combining entrepreneurial education with individualized coaching, peer learning, and practical application, The Patterson Foundation's Margin & Mission Ignition Learning Labs continue to help nonprofits build the confidence, knowledge, and capacity needed to explore innovative approaches to financial thrivability. For many organizations, the journey begins with a single question: What if the next opportunity to strengthen our mission is already within our reach?
