Dressed for Success: How Sarasota Opera Built a Thriving Enterprise from Its Costume Studio

Posted on April 24, 2026 by Mike Oxman, Managing Partner and Principal, No Margin, No Mission™ & Larry Clark, Managing Partner and Principal, No Margin, No Mission™

In the wake of the pandemic, like many arts organizations, Sarasota Opera faced both disruption and opportunity. Recognizing the range of assets that could be leveraged to strengthen both revenue and mission impact, the organization began exploring earned-income possibilities through The Patterson Foundation’s Margin & Mission Ignition (MMI) Learning Labs in 2022. These sessions provided a structured environment to evaluate multiple ideas and assess their viability.

Through a thoughtful vetting and selection process, Sarasota Opera identified its existing Costume Rental Studio as the most promising opportunity for growth. With that focus, the organization applied to participate in the initiative’s intensive consulting phase, designed to expand and grow a viable venture. Supported by a strong business case and alignment in LWRCC, Sarasota Opera demonstrated preparedness for earned-income success and was selected to join the MMI “Fruitful Four” cohort.

During the intensive phase, Sarasota Opera received hands-on consulting support from No Margin, No Mission to bring rigor and structure to the effort. This was not simply about testing an idea; it was about building a thriving business within a nonprofit context. Working closely with lead consultant Mike Oxman, the team developed a formal business plan, implemented the strategy with discipline, and established performance metrics to track progress. They also partnered with MMI fundraising consultant Sara Leonard to plan for and secure the growth capital needed to support expansion.

The results have been significant. Since 2023, the Costume Rental Studio has generated more than $1.5 million in revenue, serving opera companies across the United States and Canada, as well as colleges, universities, and television and film productions. What was once an internal resource has evolved into a dynamic, outward-facing enterprise that extends Sarasota Opera’s reach far beyond its own stage.

Beyond revenue, the venture has produced meaningful ripple effects. Sarasota Opera has strengthened partnerships with educational institutions, expanded collaborations within the performing arts and media sectors, and fostered a more entrepreneurial culture internally. Staff capacity has grown alongside the business, positioning the organization to manage increased demand while continuing to deliver high-quality work.

Sarasota Opera’s experience demonstrates that when nonprofits apply discipline, strategy, and entrepreneurial thinking to mission-aligned opportunities, the results extend well beyond financial gain. By transforming an existing asset into a thriving enterprise, the organization has created a model for long-term thrivability, expanded impact, and continued relevance in a changing environment.

General Director Richard Russell shares more about the opera company’s journey with Margin & Mission Ignition.
