Inspiring community generosity through Season of Sharing

Posted on November 23, 2015 by The Patterson Foundation

To encourage generosity and spur community support, The Patterson Foundation will contribute $100,000 for every $500,000 raised during Season of Sharing. Created by Herald-Tribune Media Group in partnership with the Community Foundation of Sarasota County, Season of Sharing is an annual community movement that helps individuals and families from Sarasota, Manatee, Charlotte and DeSoto counties who are on the verge of homelessness stay in their homes.

Since 2000, Season of Sharing has raised more than $13 million and helped more than 12,000 families in the region. Year after year, the community steps up to support families and individuals at risk of losing their homes. Inspired by the generosity of our region, The Patterson Foundation has been a longtime supporter of the campaign. Contributions will be sparked by key milestones during the campaign to recognize the community’s impact.

“Season of Sharing gives people throughout Sarasota, Manatee, Charlotte and DeSoto counties the power to make a difference by helping families facing a financial crisis,” said Debra Jacobs, president and CEO of The Patterson Foundation. “There is no cap on The Patterson Foundation’s contribution – the aspiration is to provide an incentive and encourage even greater generosity and participation throughout the region.”

Season of Sharing prevents homelessness by providing targeted financial assistance for crucial needs like rent, utilities and other emergency expenses – everything from keeping the lights on to fixing car batteries. Only 15 percent of families who receive assistance from Season of Sharing require further assistance the following year, indicating that the campaign is effective at generating sustainable impact for those in need.

There are no operating costs associated with Season of Sharing. More than 70 organizations donate their time, resources and expertise to ensure that the funds raised are effectively spent and go directly to help recipients.

“A dollar spent to keep a family in their home equates to $8 needed to return a family to a home that’s been lost,” said Roxie Jerde, president and CEO of the Community Foundation of Sarasota County. “We are so grateful for The Patterson Foundation’s continued support of Season of Sharing. Their generosity allows us to help even more families stay in their homes by encouraging others to also be the one to make a difference.”
