Hearing Directly From Students and Families About Technology Needs at 13th Av

Posted on May 07, 2026 by Ericia Henry, TPF Fellow 2024/26 & Cheri Coryea, Consultant, The Patterson Foundation

Since November 2025, we’ve been sharing the journey from the Digital Access for All initiative and the 13th AV Dream Center in Bradenton with all of you. The goal of the project is to enhance the offerings and access at the Center's Computer Lab at 922 24th Street East, Bradenton, Florida. This effort opens the doors of the Center to neighborhood adults and students, welcoming them to discover the Computer Lab as a space for technology learning and skill-building.

In April, the DA4A team aligned with the Suncoast Remake Learning Days events at the Center. Five classes and a total of 80 children exchanged information with the DA4A team about their internet knowledge, the equipment they have at home, and the programs they would like to see offered at the Computer Lab.

With TPF’s continued commitment to listening and learning first, the students were given details about the next steps to engage with a Digital Navigator by taking home and discussing with their parents the types of internet services that can be offered. Also, the DA4A team collected suggestions from the students about the types of technology programs they’d like to see expanded in the Computer Lab.

Ideas mentioned were:

  • K & 1st – Typing games, iPad skills, reading for fun, Goldin learning game, and Roblox
  • 2nd & 3rd – We Will Write (typing game), Netflix, Roblox, Kahoot, and homework assistance
  • 4th & 5th – Math games and typing skills games
  • 6th–8th – Roblox, Excel, typing, math, and engineering
After hearing from the students, it is evident that they are seeking additional support with basic skills, such as typing, math, and reading.  When asked what they thought their parents would want help with, students replied the following:
  • Project for work, profiles, Facebook, TikTok, meetings, conferences attendance, PowerPoint, and Excel.
On the second day, parents gathered around the DA4A exhibitor table just outside the pick-up zone to hear from Ericia Henry, TPF Fellow and project manager, about the opportunities to add adult programs in the Computer Lab. Team members Sherry Oehler, Lyndsey Smith, and Sandra Vega-Picchietti engaged back and forth with the students and families to complete or update their surveys. Students received books related to their SRLD events, provided by 13th AV, as well as additional DA4A materials, special snacks, and the opportunity to use the spinner wheel for prizes. Adults who completed the survey received a $25 gift card and an appointment with a Digital Navigator. Parents later confirmed their ideas for offerings:
  • Web design, graphic learnings, Canva, interview techniques, and job search skills

These meaningful conversations will help shape the recommendations that will be shared with the 13th AV administration. TPF will connect with external services aligned with participants' interests to enhance Computer Lab offerings.

The project is scheduled to conclude on June 30 with a full report and implementation guidelines.
