Freedom. Pass It On. Inspiring Southwest Florida to honor veterans and their families

Editor's Note: While communities throughout the country find unique ways to honor veterans and their families -- especially leading up to Independence Day -- in Southwest Florida, it's a yearlong commitment.

Launching July 4th weekend, Freedom. Pass It On. is a media campaign to support Legacy of Valor, a movement powered by community partnerships, events, and collaborations -- all in the name of honoring veterans, inspiring patriotism and passing freedom on to others. Communities throughout our country are focusing on helping our veterans and their families more so than at any time in the history of our nation. But who exactly is a veteran?  How can we help veterans and their families and recognize their contributions to our communities?

A veteran is someone who served on active duty in the military. The biggest challenge a veteran faces today is transitioning back into his or her community. Whether returning home from the Middle East with tours in Iraq or Afghanistan or returned from Vietnam but never welcomed home appropriately, veterans and their families need the community to embrace and honor them. It is very difficult for veterans to ask for help. After all, the freedom and safety of our nation rested on their shoulders, so it was necessary to always appear to be strong.

As we approach the 237th anniversary of this great nation’s Independence, I challenge you to take some time to look around you. As you attend the wonderful events planned in our community (the Bradenton Marauders Baseball Game, Jacobites & First Brass Concert, the parades, fireworks by the bay front) look for the veterans in the crowd and take the time to thank them for their service.

Every veteran took an oath. They solemnly swore that they would support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic; that they would bear true faith and allegiance to the same; they took that obligation freely, without any mental reservations or purpose of evasion; and they well and faithfully discharged their duties.

It is time we all served those who served our nation. We, the veterans in your community, are parents, brothers and sisters, neighbors and friends. We are part of the Legacy of Valor Campaign in Southwest Florida and we are asking you to help us pass freedom on.

Every day, veterans and their families across Southwest Florida make personal sacrifices to protect our freedom. Join us in our mission to honor and support them. Get Involved. Visit FreedomPassItOn.org.
