The Magic of Building Relationships
Posted on February 05, 2026 by Ericia Henry, TPF Fellow 2024/26At The Patterson Foundation, we are very intentional about building relationships, so much so that we refer to this work as building connective tissue. As a Fellow at TPF, it is imperative that we actively build connective tissue while attending events, conferences, and engaging with community partners.
In April, I attended ABFE’s Annual Conference, where I had the opportunity to meet many inspiring individuals, one of whom was Laurin Kelley. Laurin is a consultant and the founder of her own firm, Battle Plan Strategic Consulting. We first connected quite organically while grabbing breakfast on one of the conference days. From that brief encounter, we made a point to stay connected throughout the remainder of the conference.
After returning home, I followed up with Laurin, and we spent time sharing our professional journeys. During that conversation, I shared my aspirations to continue learning and growing in the philanthropic and consulting space. Through those conversations and with confirmation and support from Debra, I was given the opportunity to be “loaned out” to Laurin’s consulting firm, where I assisted with managing a client’s budget. This experience was a direct result of relationship-building rooted in authenticity and follow-through.
During our podcast conversation, I begin by sharing how Laurin and I first met. We then dive into what inspired Laurin to start her own consulting firm and explore the relationships throughout her life that shaped her professional journey. Laurin speaks candidly about how her experiences and connections informed the way she built her firm. She also shares powerful examples of relationships that opened doors for her and offers advice to emerging leaders on how to build and maintain authentic connections.
If you are interested in learning how the magic of relationships played a role in both Laurin’s journey and our connection, and how meaningful relationships can shape career growth and advancement, this conversation is one you won’t want to miss.
