EdExploreSRQ: Impact That Helps Propel Experiential Learning Forward

Posted on July 26, 2017 by Wendy Katz, consultant EdExploreSRQ

In a recent EdExploreSRQ blog What’s hot this summer with EdExploreSRQ?, Dr. Todd Bowden, Superintendent of Sarasota County Schools, and Laura Kingsley, Chief Academic Officer, recently reaffirmed their strong commitment to the EdExploreSRQ initiative.

They both convey the importance of continuing experiential learning experiences for all students but in particular for students in our low-income schools who rarely have exposure to the rich arts, cultural, and scientific resources that reside in our community. Dr. Bowden shared his excitement about the new Career Explorations created by the Education Foundation of Sarasota County in partnership with leading local businesses. Middle school students now gain a unique behind the scenes look at possible job opportunities in manufacturing, construction, biotechnology, the arts, healthcare and more.

Additionally, Dr. Bowden and Dr. Kingsley offered heartfelt messages of deep appreciation to the ExExploreSRQ partners including The Patterson Foundation, Education Foundation of Sarasota County, Community Foundation of Sarasota County, Arts and Cultural Alliance of Sarasota County, and the Science and Environment Council of Southwest Florida for their continued involvement and financial support allowing our students access to the plethora of enrichment experiences that extend learning beyond the classroom walls. They thanked the countless providers and organizations that invest in our students’ futures with phenomenal learning Explorations that will create lasting memories for years beyond and may even rouse future career opportunities. They conveyed genuine enthusiasm and optimism for EdExploreSRQ’s impact on student achievement and challenged the team to identify stories that demonstrate this tangible impact during the 2017-2018 school year.

One such tangible impact that will help propel experiential learning forward is the 2nd Annual EdExtravaganza. Teachers and administrators from throughout Sarasota, Manatee, Charlotte, and DeSoto counties are invited to join EdExploreSRQ on Saturday, August 5, 2017, from 9am-3pm at Suncoast Technical College where they can meet with dozens of Exploration providers and learn about all they have to offer for K-12 teachers and students in the four-county area during the 2017-2018 school year.

There will be sample performances and demonstrations going on throughout the day. School district staff and representatives from the local foundations will be on hand as well to discuss available grant opportunities. Food, prizes, and fun are guaranteed for all who attend. It is clear the summer heat is on with EdExploreSRQ!
