Connecting Communities: Building Bridges at the DeSoto County Ahead Event
Posted on February 17, 2025 by Maria Schaedler-Luera, consultant with The Patterson FoundationI (Maria Schaedler-Luera) had the privilege of volunteering at the DeSoto County Ahead Resource Fair, a gathering aimed at fostering collaboration and creating opportunities for the residents of DeSoto County. My role included welcoming attendees at the registration table, where I experienced firsthand the community’s enthusiasm and engagement.
One of the highlights of the evening was the number of attendees who came. Not because they had registered, but because they were personally invited by someone they knew. This demonstrated the incredible power of word-of-mouth in building a connected and engaged community. It was heartening to see neighbors bringing neighbors, a testament to the trust and bonds within DeSoto County.
The event space was beautifully prepared, exuding a welcoming atmosphere where energy and excitement were palpable. People of all generations came together to share ideas, connect, and celebrate the possibilities ahead. Moments like these reinforce the importance of creating inclusive spaces that encourage collaboration and connection.
As someone who wears many hats—from Patriot Plaza Tour Coordinator to co-lead of the ESOL/ELL initiative—I was especially thrilled to meet veterans from DeSoto County. I connected with one veteran who is now planning a visit to Patriot Plaza, and I could tell it meant a lot to her to be invited in person. These interactions underscored the importance of not only creating accessible opportunities but also building meaningful one-on-one relationships that inspire participation and connection.
The DeSoto County Ahead event was a true reflection of the power of community and collaboration. It’s inspiring to see how events like this can ignite connections, generate enthusiasm, and pave the way for future opportunities. I’m proud to have played a small part in such a meaningful gathering and look forward to seeing how the seeds planted that night will grow.
