It’s Time to Begin Hurricane Season Preparations
Posted on June 11, 2025 by Cheri Coryea, Consultant, The Patterson FoundationMost everyone in this region is well aware that June 1 – November 30 each year is declared hurricane season in the State of Florida. We haven’t forgotten hurricanes Charley, Irma, Ian, Milton, and the countless others that have significantly impacted our region, especially DeSoto County. As a precaution and to help residents of DeSoto County prepare for the season, on June 3rd, the DeSoto County Emergency Management Department, in partnership with DeSoto County Board of County Commissioners, held their annual Hurricane Preparedness Expo at the Turner Agri-Civic Center, 2250 NE Roan St., Arcadia, FL.
Along with the County’s Emergency Management Department, many other agencies from the community participated. These agencies consisted of organizations that are most needed before, during, and after a hurricane or other serious weather condition or community-impacted events such as American Red Cross, DeSoto Long Term Housing Recovery Group, Arcadia/DeSoto Habitat for Humanity, DeSoto Homeless Services, All Faiths Food Bank, and many, many more. The doors opened at 5:00 pm, and agencies and vendors welcomed hundreds of community members with safety and planning resources. Multiple presentations were provided, and the event was free and well attended by residents and visitors.
If you missed the Expo and need access to resources and more information, contact the DeSoto County Emergency Management Department at (863) 996-4831 or email EOC@desotobocc.com. They will be happy to help you.
