Community Generosity Lifts Season of Sharing Beyond $2 Million for Sixth Year

Posted on February 03, 2019 by Debra Jacobs, president and CEO of The Patterson Foundation
For the sixth straight year, our community has raised more than $2 million over months of generous giving for Season of Sharing, the annual campaign serving those on the verge of homelessness in Sarasota, Manatee, Charlotte and DeSoto counties. These funds, which include $300,000 in contributions from The Patterson Foundation, will strengthen thousands of individuals and families throughout the Suncoast.

Since its inception in 2000, the steadfastness with which our community has risen to the opportunity Season of Sharing affords every year is nothing short of remarkable. Once again, donors have demonstrated generosity beyond measure for those less fortunate and affirmed this strategy for keeping people from falling into the perils of homelessness — a less costly approach than returning homeless residents to permanent housing.

For many in our community, particularly those living paycheck to paycheck, there is a thin margin between living in a home and losing the safety and security that home provides. Essential expenses — fixing a car that suddenly won’t start; a monthly rent payment; an unexpected hospital stay — can jeopardize a family’s living situation and force them onto the streets. Threats like illness, emergency repairs, and other unforeseen costs can happen to anyone, regardless of background. When those on the verge of homelessness are faced with them, they can be devastating. This is where the agile responsiveness of case managers working with individuals and families brings some calm to the calamity.

Stories of the individuals at the heart of this effort touch our humanity. Season of Sharing reminds us of the individual circumstances and experiences of those facing the all-too-real danger of homelessness, lending identity and authenticity to an issue that is too often dehumanized — and motivating the community to step forward and demonstrate compassion for those in need.

The partnership between the Community Foundation of Sarasota County and the Herald-Tribune Media Group continues to provide a way for people to help other people lead lives with a renewed sense of security. Beyond this collaboration, the local agencies working with those less fortunate help ensure that every dollar raised for Season of Sharing goes directly to individuals and families. Their donations of time, talent and expertise are what makes Season of Sharing’s outstanding impact possible. The Patterson Foundation applauds these collective efforts with the knowledge of the thousands of lives they will touch in our region.
