AI and a 9-1-1 Call Center, Tech for Older Adults, and the DA4A Journey

Posted on April 16, 2025 by Andrew Spector, TPF Fellow 2023/26
I’m thrilled to share the publication of three new podcasts on The Patterson Foundation’s Beyond the Blog podcast.
  1. Optimizing 9-1-1 Operations Using AI and Tech with Jake Saur
  2. Transforming the Digital Access Landscape for Older Americans with Tom Kamber
  3. The DA4A Journey with John Ferguson

All three podcasts were recorded while Jake, Tom, and John were in Sarasota for the Digital Access for All Symposium, Suncoast Connect: Innovating and Thriving in the Digital Age in March. Tom and Jake led breakout sessions, and John was an opening presenter.

A little bit about each podcast:

Optimizing 9-1-1 Operations Using AI and Tech with Jake Saur
Jake Saur, CPE, RPL, ENP, is the ECC Administrator for Arlington County, VA. Jake has dedicated over two decades to advancing public safety and emergency management, beginning as a Paramedic with the Manatee County Department of Public Safety in 2001. Jake is a nationally recognized leader in the 9-1-1 industry, with a track record of driving workforce development and adopting Next Generation 9-1-1 technologies. In the podcast, Jake discusses how Arlington County uses AI and tech to optimize 9-1-1 operations, the impact of this effort, and the art of public-private partnership.

As you listen, consider: What opportunities might there be at your organization or in your community for optimizing efficiency with AI or tech? How about opportunities for positive public-private partnerships?

Transforming the Digital Access Landscape for Older Americans with Tom Kamber

Tom Kamber is the Founder and Executive Director of Older Adults Technology Services (OATS) and Senior Planet from AARP. He is a leading expert on aging and technology and is regularly featured in national media. In the podcast, Tom discusses the origin and early evolutions of OATS, OATS’s strategy and tactics, OATS’s impact, and how to build high-impact and high-trust partnerships.

As you listen, consider: What does digital access for older adults look like in your community? What are your community’s strengths and opportunities for improvement in this area?

The DA4A Journey with John Ferguson
John Ferguson is the Director of Member Programs for Indiana Philanthropy Alliance (IPA), where he develops and directs a comprehensive offering of IPA’s education, networking, and collaboration programming. Prior to joining IPA, John was a Fellow at The Patterson Foundation, where he contributed to the creation and development of several innovative projects, including Digital Access for All (DA4A). In the podcast, John discusses the origin story of DA4A, the three-legged stool of digital access, and the current and future strategy of DA4A.

As you listen, consider: How has DA4A supported your efforts since its inception? What are your aspirations for it moving forward?
