The Power of a Simple Conversation

Posted on June 06, 2025 by Lyndsey Smith, consultant with The Patterson Foundation

It's amazing how a simple conversation can turn into so much more. Most evenings, like most, my husband and I catch up over dinner about how our day was and any new projects we are working on. I often share about the work I get to do with The Patterson Foundation. And more often than not, Digital Access for All (DA4A) makes its way into the conversation, whether it's a success story, a challenge we're working through, or a moment that made me smile.  I never really thought much about those conversations. But recently, I was reminded just how far a few words can go.

One day, Dan came home from work explaining that a coworker's home had been struck by lightning, frying the computer she had just saved up for. She didn't have the means to replace it and was feeling discouraged. Because of the conversations we had had over dinner, he asked if I thought DA4A could help.

Soon after, Angela filled out her intake form and was connected with one of our amazing Digital Navigators, Joni. That introduction changed everything. With support from The Patterson Foundation and Sarasota Technology Users Group, Angela received a refurbished computer, at no cost.

But what makes this even more meaningful is that Angela is currently battling cancer. The computer isn't just a tool.  She uses it to book appointments, check lab results through her patient portal, and stay connected with her care team. It also gives her something to focus on during treatments, a way to pass the time and find distractions in hard moments.

But it wasn't just about the device. It was the time Joni took with her, the kindness shown, and the sense that someone was in her corner. Angela later told us how grateful she was that something as casual as a lunch break conversation turned into real support when she needed it most.

That's the power of words. A moment you don't think much of can open a door for someone else. What started as a casual story over dinner ended up helping someone move forward.

Words matter. Conversations matter. And even when we don't realize it, the stories we share can open doors for others. You never know who's listening or how far your words might reach.
