Walking the New Civic Path Together: Lessons from the book circle

In a recent episode of Beyond the Blog, Sarasota local and Muscle Repair Shop owner Butch Phelps shared his experience as a participant in a New Civic Path book circle. His reflections offered a glimpse into how these circles are more than just conversations about a book; they are opportunities to reconnect with community, build trust, and spark meaningful action.

For Butch, one of the most valuable parts of the experience was the authenticity it encouraged. Showing up as his true self and hearing others do the same created a safe space for genuine connection. The circle reminded him that while national headlines often dominate our attention, the most meaningful changes happen closer to home. Just like a football team where each player has a role, a community thrives when everyone recognizes their place on the team and works together.

The book circle also reignited his commitment to being present in community life, especially after the isolation many experienced during the pandemic. Listening to the stories of fellow neighbors, leaders, and everyday helpers quietly making a difference affirmed for him that incredible work is already happening in our communities, even if it rarely makes the front page. These conversations shifted the focus from fear and frustration toward possibility, highlighting the power of a “can-do” spirit rooted in collaboration.

Perhaps most importantly, the experience served as a call to action. The New Civic Path book circle doesn’t simply inspire reflection, but it pushes participants to ask what comes next. For Butch, that meant remembering the value of consistency, storytelling, and service, and embracing the idea that collective action, whether it’s checking in on neighbors after a storm or volunteering with local organizations, all create ripples that can spread from one community to the next.

The value of this experience lies not only in the ideas shared but also in the trust built among participants. It transforms learning into possibility, encouraging each person to recognize their role in strengthening the whole. As Butch put it best, “Just do it. You won’t regret it.”

If you’re ready to step into a space where authentic conversations turn into meaningful action, join a New Civic Path book circle. Together, we can deepen civic trust, explore what’s possible, and take the next steps forward.
