DeSoto Harwood Public Innovators Lab: Getting Started
Posted on February 05, 2025 by Lyndsey Smith, consultant with The Patterson FoundationRecently, DeSoto County community members, nonprofits, and representatives from The Patterson Foundation (TPF) came together for the two-day Public Innovators Lab. Facilitated by Rich Harwood and his team, the event fostered collaboration, strengthened connections among local change-makers, and sparked innovative ideas to drive community progress. Their guidance was instrumental in shaping the discussions and insights that emerged.
Throughout the lab, we focused on the importance of taking action, starting small to go big, and embracing the mindset of "Turning Outward." By shifting our focus from internal challenges to the aspirations and opportunities within the community, we were reminded that meaningful change begins with listening and understanding. Together, we explored ways to get in motion, recognizing that even small steps can create a ripple effect of progress.
These two days were filled with moments of discovery and reflection. We leaned into the discomfort of stepping outside our comfort zones, knowing this is where growth happens. By engaging deeply with one another's stories and aspirations, we began creating a new trajectory of hope for DeSoto County—one grounded in collaboration and shared purpose. The conversations reminded us of the successes we've already seen and how these fragmented pieces can come together to form a stronger, more connected whole.
As we worked together, we identified opportunities to address critical needs in the community, from housing to youth, fostering connections through faith, and enhancing healthcare. These opportunities will guide our collective efforts as we build momentum and create ripples of change that matter most to the people of DeSoto County.
The Public Innovators Lab reaffirmed that turning outward, taking action, and starting small are the keys to sparking significant transformation. By listening, collaborating, and staying in motion, we are creating a brighter future, one small step at a time. Together, we can build a network of support and authentic hope that will uplift everyone in DeSoto County.
