Harmony in the Streets Builds Connections Between Youth and Law Enforcement
Posted on September 08, 2026 by Ashley Coone, Co-founder and Executive Director of Links to Success and The Patterson Foundation consultant & Kaitlin Knapp, DeSoto County Sheriff’s Office, Public Information OfficerBuilding strong relationships with every member of the community is important to the DeSoto County Sheriff’s Office, including relationships with its youngest residents. Through the annual Harmony in the Streets Summer Camp, local children enjoy a week of fun, learning, and positive interaction with deputies and community partners.
Hosted by the DeSoto County Sheriff’s Office in partnership with the Florida Sheriffs Youth Ranches, the 2026 camp welcomed children ages 6 through 12 to the Turner Agri Civic Center from July 27 through July 31.
Throughout the week, campers participated in activities that introduced them to different areas of law enforcement and public safety. During Detention Day, children learned about the work of detention deputies, explored a transport vehicle, and saw some of the equipment deputies use to keep people safe. On Communications Day, dispatchers taught campers how and when to call 911. The children even created their own headsets similar to those worn by emergency dispatchers. School Resource Deputies spoke with campers about bullying, school safety, first aid, and what children should do if they see someone being bullied. Criminal Investigative Detectives also demonstrated how evidence, including fingerprints, is collected during an investigation. DeSoto County Fire Rescue joined the camp to teach children about fire safety, showed them a fire truck, and explained what to do during a house fire. After the weather cleared, campers enjoyed Water Day with games, a water slide, and plenty of opportunities to cool off and have fun.
The week concluded with a visit from DeSoto County Sheriff James F. Potter, a drone demonstration, and a flag folding ceremony presented by members of the Nam Knights of America Motorcycle Club Boondocks Chapter. Each child received an American flag before families gathered for the camp graduation ceremony.
Harmony in the Streets gives deputies an opportunity to get to know local children, build trust, and show them that law enforcement officers are here to help keep them safe. At the same time, children gain a better understanding of what deputies do and why their work matters.
Since beginning in 2023, Harmony in the Streets has become a successful and meaningful summer tradition. The DeSoto County Sheriff’s Office looks forward to continuing this fun and educational experience for local children and families.
