Sarasota Village

The Purpose

Connecting with the people, activities, and community resources that enrich our lives is essential in maintaining our health and well-being as we age. Many older adults' social and communal isolation throughout the COVID-19 pandemic has demonstrated the importance of establishing and strengthening these connections. People nationwide have successfully reduced their isolation, increased their independence, and enhanced their purpose of life by creating Villages. A Village is a nonprofit network that helps people access key services — such as transportation, technology assistance, and shopping for groceries — community engagement activities, and other important resources that promote aging in place.

Strengthening the Impact

Sarasota, Florida — home to one of the state’s largest populations of older adults — is creating a Village of its own that leverages its rich cultural assets and robust services to evolve aging in the community. For more than a decade, The Patterson Foundation has optimized opportunities to help people maintain their well-being as they age. The Patterson Foundation is strengthening this effort by investing in consulting support to provide facilitation and strategic guidance for the creation and operation of the Sarasota Village.

A Village is a community-based network of members and organizations engaged in aging interdependently and maintaining well-being.

  • Promote neighbor-to-neighbor support

Why a Village in Sarasota?

Sarasota County is home to one of Florida’s largest populations of older adults, with more than a third of its residents aged 65 and over. Though Sarasota is rich in cultural activities and useful services for all age groups, there are still barriers to connecting with them. Establishing a Village in Sarasota will leverage community assets to help build stronger connections within the community and across generations.

Who is working on the Sarasota Village?

The Sarasota Village is a collaboration of dedicated individuals contributing their time, resources, and expertise to evolve concepts that meet Sarasota community members' needs and aspirations. The Patterson Foundation is strengthening this effort by investing in consulting support to provide facilitation and strategic guidance. The Village to Village Network, a national organization helping communities develop and manage Villages, guides the process.

How does a Village benefit the broader community that it serves?

Villages form key partnerships, provide resources and referrals, and are an important resource for strengthening their communities. Villages are a community-based model providing a coordinated and comprehensive approach to engaging and meeting their members' needs. Village members are a valuable resource who engage in projects to improve their communities through volunteering, advocating, and creating solutions to community issues.

How have Villages been involved in WHO Age-Friendly Initiatives?

Several Villages have influenced the initiation and success of World Health Organization Age-Friendly City initiatives in their communities. The Sarasota Village effort is aligned with Age-Friendly Sarasota through the Sarasota County Aging System Policy Coordinator's participation on the Exploratory Team and The Patterson Foundation's engagement.
