The Patterson Foundation Strengthens Season of Sharing

Posted on November 08, 2017 by The Patterson Foundation
Every dollar spent to keep a family in their home equates to $8 needed to return a family to a home that’s been lost. Season of Sharing, now in its 18th year, was created by the Community Foundation of Sarasota County and the Herald-Tribune Media Group to help individuals and families on the verge of homelessness.

To strengthen giving and encourage community generosity, The Patterson Foundation will contribute $100,000 for every $500,000 raised by the community during Season of Sharing through Jan. 31, 2018. There is no cap on The Patterson Foundation’s potential contribution during this timeframe.

Since its inception, Season of Sharing has raised and distributed more than $17 million and helped more than 18,000 families throughout Sarasota, Manatee, Charlotte, and DeSoto counties. The Patterson Foundation has been a longtime supporter of the campaign, contributing more than $3.6 million since joining the annual endeavor in 2010.

“Season of Sharing is about people stepping up to help those less fortunate stay in their homes,” said Debra Jacobs, president and CEO of The Patterson Foundation. “Every year, our community inspires us with its incredible generosity. By supporting Season of Sharing and offering this match during and immediately after the holidays, The Patterson Foundation embraces the giving spirit of the season and hopes to ignite even greater community generosity.”

Season of Sharing helps families stay secure in their homes by providing targeted financial assistance for critical needs like rent, utility payments, child care, transportation and other emergency expenses. In addition to addressing immediate needs, funds from Season of Sharing also support long-term stability. Only 15 percent of families who receive assistance from Season of Sharing require further assistance the following year, indicating that the campaign is effective at generating sustainable impact for those in need.

There are no operating costs associated with Season of Sharing, which means 100 percent of the money collected is distributed directly to those in need. Every year, more than 50 organizations donate their time, resources and expertise to ensure that the funds raised are effectively spent to help recipients.
